Is it possible to clean my dvd writer/drive without taking it apart?
I want to keep my computer intact, and my dvd writer isn't reading my discs anymore. Can i just spray canned air into it to clean? Will this help clear the lens?
Please do NOT spray compressed air into the drive. As any dust you have in the drive will scatter and most likely really mess up the drive (coat the internal mirriors with dust). Follow the answer from golfer2. A lens cleaning CD is the best way to go (Either Radio Shack or Walmart).
Then again if your drive is not reading your discs. check out purchasing a new drive. They are rather inexpensive, unless it is a Blu-Ray drive. In that case contact the manufacture of your PC and check into a warranty issue. I darn near destroyed my older Panasonic DVR's drive by doing the compressed air thing years ago. However I was able to disassemble it and clean the mirrors and lens. Also a very touchy operation.
