As some of the answers said, just about any AMD am2 socket chip will do, the higher the number the faster the chip, if you change out the motherboard, you will have to reactive Windows, also Dell cases have proprietary designs. When you swap out the CPU, you will need to clean the heat sink and apply thermal paste to the heat sink. As for a suggestion, an AMD Athlon 2x 6000 would be nice. 3.0 ghz The computer you have is ok, another thing that would help would be a dedicated graphics card, you will need to know the slot type ( pci, agp, pci-e x1 or pci-e x16) . If this is a new rig, contact Dell before opening you will void warranty. The mobo will have the make and model number on it as well, with that info you can go to the manufactuers web site for more info.

Also Socket 940 is different from AM2 they do not interchange.
