Is it true that part of the BIOS is on one of my memory sticks inside my Dell Dimension 2400?
I'm asking this because I had a memory error, and I had to get a new stick of memory shipped out (by Dell themselves as this was the only fix). I was told by the customer service rep that because Dell does weird things like putting part of the startup routine on a piece of memory, I would be locked down into business with Dell.
Has any one else heard of this and can back me up, or correct me if I'm wrong?
Thanks,
Zeke
I seriously doubt this not only because I dont see any computer manufacturer going that far to lock a customer into buying components strictly through them but also because I changed out my GF's Dell Inspiron's memory with a third party brand of memory and never have I had any issues with BIOS's or the memory in general not functioning properly.
Also I am sure if Dell really were to do something like this being that they are the largest manufacturer of PC's worldwide then someone would have easily caught onto this and reported it (I dont know to who but im pretty sure it wouldnt be legal to do this).
Hope this helps.

News and Articles for People Interested in Dell Memory Sticks

USB Memory Sticks, USB Memory Cards or USB Flash Drives have been selling well as a promotional giveaway gift for some time now, and are available in a range of memory sizes. But, just how important is their size? Probably the biggest selling item in the personalised and imprinted gifts market, is currently the USB Flash Drive, sometimes called USB Memory Sticks or even USB Memory Cards.
As the prices for the memory chips fell, so the orders for them went up. They are a truly sought after business gift with masses of choice available to you. Imprinted USB memory sticks are available in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours, not to mention memory sizes. For example, you can get them in the shape of a wine bottle, or a syringe, even a little character/person. They are used to carry around information normally stored on your PC, from data files and photographs to Powerpoint presentations, etc and are great for moving files from one PC to another, or to simply have important data to hand at any time.
You may be visiting a client, and unexpectedly, they ask to see a presentation or brochure. You wouldn't just happen to have your laptop with you, but you might have all the files you need on this device, and you could simply plug it into the USB port on your clients PC, and voila!
They are also very popular to give away at trade shows and are a cost effective alternative to a printed brochure. The downside of a brochure is that in order to keep the production costs down, you need to get as many printed as you possible can. The result is you are left with unwanted brochures where the print/copy is out of date. Imagine loading up the contents of a brochure onto one of these little devices, you'd only need to load up the quantity you truly need. If the data changes, simply erase it, and start all over again.
So, my question is this: Why does everybody seem to think they need at least a ONE Gigabyte of memory?
With sizes ranging from as little as 128Mb, why pay more for a larger size? The 128Mb size is fine for carrying around loads of stuff, and plenty of folk think they're brilliant, as well as cheaper to buy. Just what are you going to be doing with all that mobile memory, or is this one of those 'mine's bigger than your's' moments?
