You can try to speed up your PC by following various guidelines and deploy tools for improving the performance such as:
- Clean up your hard disk and defragment it.
- Uninstall obsolete programs.
- Check for virus and malware
- Cleanup registry.
Chances are that your PC will show a significant improvement in performance but if it still is a distant shadow of the new computer, which you bought some time back, you need to take decisive action.
You need to ensure whether to go for an upgrade or to buy a new computer. There are various issues that you should consider which will help you make this decision, first of which is cost.
You need to appreciate the fact that there are serious costs involved in purchasing a new computer. So, mostly the users prefer to give upgrade at least one chance before they finally decide for a new computer. A thumb rule is that if your upgrade is going to be less than one-third of the cost of a new PC, it usually makes sense to go for it otherwise not. You must take into account all costs including the charges of the computer expert while comparing the two.
Secondly, if you can identify the source of the problem, it usually becomes easier to opt for an upgrade. If your computer has a single problem that is contributing to your computer issues, a computer upgrade is likely to solve your problem. On the other hand, if your computer is plagued with a whole range of problems which are unrelated to each other, then your computer problems may be too complex or expensive to resolve through an upgrade. Far more serious consequence could be that even after an upgrade, you may continue to be haunted by one of the problems that were left untouched by the upgrade.
Thirdly, you must be prepared for the fact that there may be compatibility issues, if you go for an upgrade. There are certain components of your computer which are more likely to have compatibility issues than others. For example, there have been several instances where upgrade of a computer processor has caused compatibility problems. Not all computer motherboards are compatible with new processors, so you must ascertain all facts before you go ahead with it. At the same time there are components which almost never have such problems. A network adaptor is one such component.
Lastly, you must keep in mind the ease of upgrade in mind. Certain components can be replaced or upgraded within a couple of minutes while many others require complete surgery of your computer. Components like Hard disks, Video Adaptors and RAM (Random Access Memory) are comparatively easy to change and are one of the popular components that users choose to upgrade.
In conclusion, the decision to upgrade or buy a new one will be a personal decision but it will be worthwhile to spend some time on the issues discussed above, before arriving on a decision.
