Intel Core Quad CPUs Articles and News
As for the Q6600, our latest encounter with this old favorite was peculiar to say the least. Its long-lasting appeal has largely been thanks to its giant-killing overclocking prowess. With the latest GO stepping routinely hitting clockspeeds of 3.5GHz and up, why would you bother with its more expensive Core 2 Quad stablemates?
Well, there is one reason. You might just get a chip like ours that stubbornly refuses to overclock at all. Now, it's very possible that a little longer with our latest Q6600 sample will unlock a little headroom eventually. A change of motherboard, BIOS tweaks and updates usually do the job...eventually. But remember: huge overclocks - while common - are not an absolute given. More to the point, they're not a part of the official feature-set, so you're unlikely to find much sympathy with your retailer if you attempt to RMA a processor because of any failure to clock the twangers off it.
Last and frankly least, we have the bargain basement dual-core processors. Granted, we're big fans of quad-core CPUs. Games aside, the vast majority of PC applications that really benefit from a high-performance processor now scale nicely with quad-core chips. But these vanishingly cheap chips won't disappoint if your budget really can't stretch much beyond the $l00 mark for a CPU.
Out of the box, AMD's 2.7GHz Athlon X2 7750+ Black Edition comfortably has the measure of the Intel's Pentium dual-core E2l80's miserly 2GHz stock clockspeed. But despite the Athlon's overclocking friendly unlocked CPU multiplier, the humble E2180 is yet another Intel chip with ungodly overclocking headroom. It squeaks past the Athlon's 3.lGHz top clock to 3.2GHz, an incredible boost of over 50 %.
The overall winner? Much as we worship the newest technology, we love cheap tech that slaps its more expensive siblings silly even more. Normally, that would mean a split contest between the Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Phenom II 940, depending on which platform you already own. But you know what happened to our Q6600. The spoils must, therefore, go to the Phenom II. A CPU supertest victory for AMD?
